With hundreds of costumes, clubs and Aztecs (balls) to buy at the Pangya Shop, gamers could spend countless hours earning money - called "Pang" on Pangya Island - to purchase new duds. And Character unlocks are just the beginning. I was immediately interested in unlocking the other characters. Starting as Scout, the eager young descendant of the original Pangyan hero, I found that punctuating golf games with short dialogue sequences actually creates a nice pace for the experience. Once you complete the prologue section and move on to the proper story mode, you can choose your character and dive right into a light-hearted golf adventure.Įven cuter. I found the entire opening of Pangya to be very welcoming to golf newbies. She'll teach you how to charge up your shots, navigate the green and she'll even offer a brief explanation of the scoring system for gamers unfamiliar with golf. At the beginning of the story mode, the time and space fairy Pipin (yes, she bends the laws of time and space) walks you through the basic game mechanics. Otherwise, your swing might not be picture-perfect. If you hit X one last time right on the colored line, you'll get a special "Pangya" shot which guarantees your accuracy and power. Hit X to stop the slider at your desired power level and it'll start zipping back down the gauge towards a small colored line at the end. When you hit X, a marker slides across a gauge at the bottom of the screen that indicates how strong your swing will be. You can select a club, line up your shot, scope out an overhead view of the course and then enter a timing-based system for powering up your swing. When you actually get to the golf mechanics, you'll find that Pangya plays just like any other solid arcade golf simulator. From what I've seen so far, Pangya's really got it together. With every menu and every gameplay device, you'll see cute character portraits, crisp sounds, relaxing music and slick visuals. As silly as it all sounds, I found the entire setup adorable and the serene piano music that plays over this prologue is just one indication that Pangya: Fantasy Golf has incredible polish. Now the inhabitants celebrate the hero's good deeds by playing the game of Pangya in remembrance of him. A hero from Earth came to Pangya Island to fulfill Brie's wishes and the island was saved. You've probably noticed that this sounds an awful lot like a game of golf and it is. If someone could hit a magic ball, called an "Aztec," with the Air Lance into the holes that were bleeding life energy, the leaks could be stopped. Fortunately, a sorceress named Brie the Wise One offered a solution to the catastrophic problem. With its vitality being sapped away, the island was growing weaker and dying. As the game's prologue reveals, the magical island of Pangya was in serious trouble years ago when a group of magicians used dark sorcery to steal the island's life energy. This isn't a dilapidated port of some console version this is its own game and it rocks.Ĭute. The PSP version of Pangya might be familiar to fans of the Pangya universe but the game was designed from the ground-up for Sony's portable.
